A. Colocation allows you to host your server on our network. We provide you with power and a network connection, ensuring your server is available 24/7. You can take advantage of our hosting infrastructure, instead of having to create this environment yourself. For a fuller answer, click here.
A. The difference is subtle, but important. With dedicated servers, you rent a server from us and install your website on it. With colocation, however, you supply your own server - and simply rent the physical space required to house it. So it's much cheaper and puts you in control!
A. You can use any size server you want. We recommend a purpose-designed 19 inch rackmount chassic - as this will fit best into our server racks. But we do also provice "open rack" hosting, which suits any kind of machine.
A. The space used by your server is measured in Rack Units or "U". One rack unit is commonly referred to as "1U"; similarly, 2 rack units are "2U" and so on. 1U is approximately 1.75 inches of vertical rack space. Rackmount servers are usually 1U or 2U; desktop machines are approximately 4U.
A. That depends on the operating system you choose to use. UNIX-like systems, like Linux or FreeBSD, allow you to remotely connect to the machine using the secure SSH protocol. Microsoft Windows Servers can be accessed using Microsoft's Terminal Services or Remote Desktop applications. You can also use PC Anywhere or VNC.
A. If you want to reboot your server and are unable to do so remotely, you can request one of our technicians reboot the server for you manually. In this case, we will also monitor your server as it boots and take note of any error messages which may be displayed.
A. Skynet provides emergency 24-hour support, should you need it.
A. We request that clients have their server configured and installed correctly before it arrives at our data centre - so we can just plug it in and turn it on. However, if you need to update or change th operating system at a later date, one of our technicians will be happy to do it for you.
A. We will have your server online the same date we receive it - usually within an hour of it arriving at our data centre.
A. Should you need to access your server after installation, you can make an appointment to come and see us at Skynet.
